Best Practices for Site Security

Dear New Site Owner,

Welcome to the LiveEdit!  We know that the security of your personal data is of utmost importance to your business.  It is a top priority for LiveEdit, too!  We have worked with experts in the field of internet security and SEO to create standard practices to guide you when sharing your information.   

Optimizing your site requires making on-page and off-site changes.  Creating, correcting, and verifying directory listings are important elements of this process.  In order to successfully complete your new citation profile, our team will need access to an email address that belongs to you.  In order to ensure your continued privacy, we advise that you do NOT give out your personal or business login and password--to us or anyone else.  Instead, please create a dedicated new gmail account for contractor access, and change the password at the close of the project.

We recommend using Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools for tracking site traffic and keyword rankings.  In order to compile a snapshot of your current SEO profile and analyze that data over time, we ask that you grant your project coordinator access to your Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools accounts.  If you do not already have a Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools account, start by following the instructions below to create an account for each, using your personal or business Google login.  (Note:  if you have Google Analytics set up from an existing site that you are migrating to the Aurora platform, you can utilize your existing tracking code and account and do not need to create a new account.)

Creating a Google Analytics Account

Step 1: Sign up for an account by visiting the Google Analytics website.  Click the Access Google Analytics button and follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Set up your tracking code.  You can find the tracking code snippet for your property by signing in to your Analytics account, and clicking Admin in the top menu bar. From the Account and Property columns, select the property you’re working with. Click Tracking Info / Tracking Code.  

Step 3:  Visit the Google Analytics Service from the Live Edit Aurora Dashboard.

Step 4:  Enter your Google Analytics Email, Password and the Site ID you identified in Step 2.

Please do not give out your personal Google login info. Instead, use the following instructions to add your newly-created dedicated contractor gmail account as an admin to both your Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools accounts.  This will keep your information secure while allowing your partners at Live Edit access for the duration of this project.  

 Adding a User to Your Google Analytics Account:

  1. Log into your Google Analytics account at www.google.com/analytics

  2. Select your site.

  3. At the top of the page on the right hand side, click on Admin in the orange bar.

  4. Scroll down and click on user management on the right.

  5. Paste the “new email” address into the “Add Permissions for” bar at the bottom.

  6. Check“Edit” and leave “Read and Analyze” checked.  

  7. Click “Add.”

Adding a User to Your Google Webmaster Tools Acount:

  1. Log into your Google Webmaster Tools account at www.google.com/webmasters/tools

  2. Click on “Manage site” to the right of your site title in the grey box.  

  3. From the drop-down menu, select Add or Remove Users

  4. On the top right-hand side of the screen, click on the red “Add a New User” button.

  5. Paste your newly-created email address into the user email box and leave the permissions on “full.”

  6. Click “Add.”
